Numerology: How to Calculate Your Life Path Number
Your Life Path number is the single most important number in numerology — a summary of your core nature and journey. Here is how to calculate it by hand, and what each number means.
What Is a Life Path Number?
In numerology, your Life Path number is derived from your date of birth and describes your core personality, natural strengths, and the overall direction — the "path" — of your life. It is the number most readers start with, and the one that reveals the most.
Vedic numerology (Anka Vidya) goes a step further by linking each number to a planet — the Sun rules 1, the Moon rules 2, Jupiter rules 3, and so on — so your number carries the qualities of its ruling graha.
How to Calculate Your Life Path Number
You reduce your full date of birth to a single digit. Here is the method, using 14 August 1996 as an example:
- Reduce the day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
- Reduce the month: August = 8
- Reduce the year: 1996 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 6 = 25 → 2 + 5 = 7
- Add the results: 5 + 8 + 7 = 20 → 2 + 0 = 2
So this person has a Life Path 2. Keep reducing any two-digit total to a single digit — with one exception below.
What About Master Numbers?
The numbers 11, 22, and 33 are called master numbers. If your addition lands on one of these before the final reduction, many traditions keep it as-is rather than reducing (11 not reduced to 2, 22 not to 4). Master numbers carry heightened potential — and heightened challenge.
What Each Life Path Number Means
- 1 (Sun): leadership, independence, drive, pioneering
- 2 (Moon): sensitivity, cooperation, diplomacy, intuition
- 3 (Jupiter): creativity, expression, optimism, learning
- 4 (Rahu/Uranus): discipline, structure, hard work, stability
- 5 (Mercury): freedom, communication, versatility, change
- 6 (Venus): love, responsibility, harmony, service
- 7 (Ketu/Neptune): spirituality, analysis, introspection, wisdom
- 8 (Saturn): ambition, power, discipline, material mastery
- 9 (Mars): courage, compassion, completion, humanitarianism
Beyond the Life Path: Destiny & Soul Urge
Your Life Path is calculated from your birth date, but two other core numbers come from your name: the Destiny (Expression) number reveals your life purpose and talents, and the Soul Urge number reveals your deepest inner desires. Read together, the three give a rounded picture — which is exactly what a full reading covers.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most important number in numerology?
The Life Path number, calculated from your full date of birth, is considered the most important — it summarises your core nature and the overall direction of your life. The Destiny and Soul Urge numbers (from your name) add further detail.
Do you reduce master numbers 11, 22, and 33?
Usually not. If your calculation lands on 11, 22, or 33 before the final single-digit reduction, most traditions keep the master number rather than reducing it, because it carries a heightened vibration.
How does Vedic numerology differ from Western numerology?
Vedic numerology (Anka Vidya) maps each number to a ruling planet (graha) and interprets it through Sanatan wisdom — deities, gemstones, and remedies — whereas Western numerology focuses on the numbers alone. The calculation method for the Life Path number is broadly similar.
