Kundali Matching for Marriage: Ashtakoot Gun Milan Explained

Vedic Astrology··9 min read

Kundali matching compares two birth charts for marriage compatibility across eight factors. Here is what the Ashtakoot Gun Milan system measures, how the 36-point score works, and what counts as a good match.

What Is Kundali Matching?

Kundali matching (also called Gun Milan or horoscope matching) is the Vedic practice of comparing the birth charts of two people to assess their compatibility for marriage. The most widely used method is the Ashtakoot system — "eight factors" — which scores the match out of 36 points.

It is based primarily on the position of the Moon and its Nakshatra in each chart, since the Moon governs the mind and emotions.

The Eight Kootas (Factors)

Each Koota measures a different dimension of compatibility and carries a maximum number of points:

  • Varna (1 point): spiritual compatibility and ego balance
  • Vashya (2 points): mutual attraction and control
  • Tara (3 points): health and well-being of the couple
  • Yoni (4 points): physical and sexual compatibility
  • Graha Maitri (5 points): mental compatibility and friendship
  • Gana (6 points): temperament and nature
  • Bhakoot (7 points): love, finances, and family welfare
  • Nadi (8 points): health and genetic compatibility, progeny

Together these total 36 points — the maximum possible Gun Milan score.

What Score Is Considered Good?

As a general guideline:

  • Below 18: the match is traditionally not recommended
  • 18–24: an acceptable, average match
  • 24–32: a very good match
  • 32–36: an excellent match

Nadi Dosha & Bhakoot Dosha

Two factors carry special weight. Nadi dosha occurs when both partners share the same Nadi (worth the most points, 8) and is considered significant for health and progeny. Bhakoot dosha relates to the Moon-sign positions and can affect finances and family harmony. Importantly, classical astrology also describes cancellations (dosha bhanga) — conditions under which a dosha is nullified — so a flagged dosha is not always a dealbreaker. A qualified reading weighs the whole chart.

What Matching Can and Cannot Tell You

Gun Milan is a valuable guide, but it is one factor among many. A strong score does not guarantee a happy marriage, and a weaker one does not doom it — communication, values, maturity, and effort matter enormously. Use kundali matching as informed insight, alongside, not instead of, getting to know each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good Gun Milan score for marriage?

Out of 36 points, a score of 18 or above is generally considered acceptable, 24–32 is very good, and 32–36 is excellent. A score below 18 is traditionally not recommended — though a qualified astrologer weighs the whole chart and any dosha cancellations, not the number alone.

Is Kundali matching necessary for marriage?

It is a traditional practice, not a requirement. Many families use it as one input for compatibility, while others rely on it heavily. It offers useful insight into temperament and compatibility, but communication, shared values, and effort matter just as much.

Can Nadi dosha be cancelled?

Yes. Classical astrology describes several conditions (dosha bhanga) under which Nadi dosha and other doshas are considered nullified — for example, certain Moon-sign or planetary lord relationships. A flagged dosha should be examined in the full context of both charts.
